The concrete wood floor trend has been growing for nearly a decade but has been gaining popularity in the Carolinas as of late.  It is common for this flooring system to be applied to outdoor porches and patios, but Those Floor Guys have installed concrete wood floors indoors, as well.  It provides a rustic look that is beautiful in a mixed flooring system.

Concrete Wood Floor Materials

After preparing the concrete surface, a concrete overlay is applied to the slab.  The overlay is shaped and colored to look like wooden planks.  While there are a few ways to shape the concrete overlay, our preference is to use filament tape.  Filament tape joints and a heavy brush finish exagerates the distressed wood look and gives the concrete wood floor a warm and rustic appearance.

Those Floor Guys use water-based stains to color the concrete to look like wood.  The reason for this is to avoid harmful chemicals.  Improper cleaning of acid from the concrete surface can cause sealants to not cure.  Once the staining pigments are sealed, the longevity of the floor is the same regardless of the type of stain used.

The floor is top-coated with industrial acrylic.  Acrylic provides durability and scratch resistance to ensure your floor looks great for years to come.

Concrete Wood Floor Application

Surface preparation is one of the two big factors that determine the successful application of a resinous flooring system.  The concrete slab gets diamond grinded to open the pores of the concrete and remove surface debris.  This dry-grind process prevents moisture from being entrapped in the concrete slab.

Walls, posts, and trim are masked with tape and plastic to prevent accidental staining and splatter from the concrete overlay.  The concrete staining pigments are applied with a pressurized sprayer and wiped across the individual boards to blend and evenly distribute the pigment.  The water will quickly wick into the concrete and leave the pigment embedded into the pores of the concrete.

The sealant is applied by a tray and paint roller.  Typically, the concrete will receive two coats of sealant but sometimes a single, thick coat of acrylic is sufficient.

Where Is A Concrete Wood Floor Applicable?

Concrete wood floors can be used anywhere concrete slabs exist.  Some of the most beautiful applications have been in basements and family rooms.  However, concrete wood floors are commonly used on porches and patios.
